Summary on Grant Application Form
The effect of structure, promotor and support on the catalytic electro-oxidation of H2, CO and methanol on platinum is to be investigated using UHV/electrochemical transfer. Experiments will initially be carried out on Pt(110) and Pt(533) in order to model low co-ordination sites of platinum particles. The structure and stability of promoters Ru and w will be investigated, and their ability to facilitate oxygen transfer at low potentials. Experiments will be extended to the investigation of the activity of platinum deposited on conducting oxide (defective titania) supports. Surfaces will be characterised by a number of surface spectroscopies and structural techniques both before and subsequent to the electrochemistry. Both steady state and cyclic voltammetric measurement of the oxidation processes will be investigated.
