Summary on Grant Application Form
The ultimate purpose of this work will be to demonstrate the potential that diamond coated and etched seal faces possess for meeting technically advanced seal specifications in demanding engineering applications. The initial aims will be two-fold: to develop a model which can be used to analyse the tribological behaviour at a coated and etched diamond interface; and to develop methods of depositing and etching diamond coatings on seal surfaces in a controlled manner so that optimum structures can be formed. Model seal faces will then be tested under both laboratory and engineering conditions to establish optimal surfaces for real applications.
