Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary studies in our group have led to the identification of a new class of catalyst for the asymmetric reduction of ketones. Several structural variants of the catalyst have been prepared, which have in common either a N-P=O or N-P=N structural unit, which is essential for catalytic activity. Enantiomeric excesses achieved to date have been modest. However, the rate of the catalysed reaction is critically dependant on the geometry of the catalyst and this observation has aided the design of an optimum catalyst which will be prepared and utilised in this propect. A range of substrate ketones will be employed in the project, many of which form the basis for the synthesis of complex natural products and synthetic intermediates.
