Summary on Grant Application Form
The project involves a scientific and technological investigation into the development of advanced and environmentally beneficial organic surface coatings based on a novel principle of immobilising, protecting and controlling the location and delivery of biocidal molecules via their inclusion as a complex in porous inorganic carriers. The biocide structure, carrier morphology and chemistry of the system will be designed to optimise the delivery and efficiacy characteristics of the coating for various target applications. Using existing biocides and model coating formulations various methodologies will be developed to determine effective biocide levels to use and during manufacture and storage. Distribution profiles and leaching kinetic studies will be undertaken using spectroscopic and chromatographic methods with particular emphasis on understanding the physical and chemical nature of the release triggers.
