We have recently discovered a new method of measuring the rate of change of viscosity with composition for multicomponent gas mixtures. A gradient measurement has an advantage over the measurement of the actual variable because the errors after integration are usually much smaller. The key idea is to measure the changes produced by a change in composition. A small stream of perturbation gas is added to a main flow of carrier gas mixture which is flowing through a capillary tube. A delay line separates the effect of increasing the flow in the capillary tube. A delay line separates the effect of increasing the flow in the capillary tube from the change in viscosity. The capillary tube thus acts first as a flowmeter and then as a viscometer. The pressure changes upstream of the capillary tube can be used (in a new theory) to give gradient of the viscosity-composition surface.
