Summary on Grant Application Form
The present proposal is princlipally concerned with strategic investigations relevant to the developemnt of cost effective planar supported thick film electrolyte (STFE) configurations incorporating Zr(Y)O2-x electrolytes for operation with methane fuel at a lower temperature range 650-800 C using a cimple and promisin novel processing technique termed Combustion Chemical Vapour Deposition 9CCVD) in a single production process. The aims are to develop fundamental understanding of the processing, strucure and performance of prototype multilayer PEN cells (5x5cms) La(Sr)MnO3/Zr(Y)O2-x/Ni-YSZ using CCVD technique. This will be achieved by scaling up the existing CCVD equipemnta and optimising the processing conditions in order to manufacture high quality prototype PEN structures. Specific objectives are to (i) controlling the microstructure and chemical and composition of the cathode/electrolytes/ anode for improved performance; and (ii) assessing the electrochemical/thermomechanicl performance of the PEN cells as a function of processing and operating conditions. The technological objective is to enable UK industries to benefit fully from this major cost-effective new technolgy through collaboration and technology transfer.
