The next and third generation of mobile (personal) communication systems will have to provide a variety of telecommunications services in various environments to a very large number of users. A key component of such systems will be the air interface between mobile handsets and the fixed network infrastructure, which has to be both flexible and bandwidth efficient, since available radio spectrum is scarce. Current systems use air interfaces based either on time division multiple access or code division multiple access. It is as yet unclear which of these techniques would be most adequate for the next generation. Rather than to play each off against the other, we suggest integrating these techniques in a hybrid approach in order to maximise flexibility and efficiency. Some research on suitable access protocols for such a hybrid approach has already been carried out, also at the Centre for Telecommunications Research. We suggest extending this research to the physical layer, where a number of problems such as synchronisation and power control have to be tackled and efficient detection techniques need to be looked at in order to provide the basis for the design of a hybrid air interface, which is our ultimate goal.
