Summary on Grant Application Form
Power stations contain many items of rotating machinery which require condition monitoring to maintain smooth operation. The Prosig parallel PROTOR system has been successfully installed and commissioned in a number of power stations and represents state-of-the-art for synchronous rotating machinery condition monitoring. PROTOR addresses the problem of condition monitoring of the main turbine shafts but cannot be used to achieve further cost savings through health monitoring of other items of rotating plant in the power station (e.g. pumps and compressors) or in other industrial sectors. The IDAC project will investigate a range of sampling and analysis techniques which would allow condition monitoring of different types of plant which may be loosely coupled (unsychronised), and subject to high angular acceleration transient behaviour. Identified techniques will be investigated in a realistic industrial environment by implementing them within a demonstrator, allowing issues such as validation and verification to be considered.
