Summary on Grant Application Form
Fault-tolerant multicasts are a critical technology in the provision of highly available distributed services. Highly available services are supported by groups of replicated servers which communicate using reliable broadcast. Professor Hadzilacos has done seminal work establishing the precise properties which must be supported by reliable broadcast protocols in order that they may be used to construct higher-level services. His modular approach to specifying broadcast protocols considerably simplifies the software engineering of reliable systems. During the proposed visit, Professor Hadzilacos intends to work on Modular Fault-tolerant Multicasts and to relate his theoretical research results to work at Imperial College on MADS (Management of Availability in Distributed Systems) and at Queen Mary and Westfield College on collaborative work groups.
