Summary on Grant Application Form
Phenylated metallocenes such as (C5H5)Co(C4Ph4) are very stable and easy to synthesis organometallics. It is aimed to incorporate these building blocks into molecules capable of interactive dynamic gearing such that rotational information can be transferred through defined three-dimensional space. To demonstrate the viability of this approach, (C5H4I)Co(C4Ph4)will be linked via an acetylene spacer to the triptytcylmoiety to give a simple 4 : 3 bevel system and the first example of a molecular gear in which the two cogs have a different phase relationship. Extension will then follow to the synthesis of 4 : 4 spur systems in which two (C5H5)Co(C4Ph4) units are linked via a naphthalene spacer. To insure that the two cogs are forced into an interactive relationship will require asymmetric functionalisation of the organometallic units. Investigation into this methodology offers spin-off developments, especially in asymmetric synthesis and an understanding of propeller chirality. Linking together the 4 : 3 and 4:4 gears offers the possibility of generating larger interlinked nano-gears which could be further extended through the development of a ferrocene 5-gear.
