Summary on Grant Application Form
The major objective of this work is to investigate the important features involved in the selective activation of ethane on oxide surfaces. This information will then be used to design novel high activity ultra selective catalysts for the single stage conversion of ethane to acetic acid. The identification of such a one step process will be more energy and carbon efficient when compared with the existing technology based on methanol carbonylation and will represent a major advance in clean technology. Initial catalysts will be based on V containing catalysts incorporating the V(IV)/V(V) oxidation couple. Experiments designed to probe oxygen activation (18O/16O exchange) and hydrocarbon activation (D/H exchange) will be used initially and it is anticipated that the research will be of generic value for hydrocarbon activation in general.
