Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is aimed at reducing the enormous costs of tooling for the Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding process by substituting stainless steel tools with disposable ceramic tool inserts. New applications are often abandoned or delayed due to the tooling start-up costs and the lack of confidence that such a tool could be used for subsequent production. A low cost ceramic tool containing all the necessary component geometry is sought. Such a tool will require an homogenous search, a list of possible ceramics will be produced. Small model inserts will be made and tested. The most successful ceramic will be used to produce an appropriate real aircraft component tool. The focus will be to develop an inexpensive generic family of tools. The technology may then be transferred to composite tool design, thereby harnessing the benefits gained through the SPF exercise.
