Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research programme represented a first year of the EPRSC Advanced Research Fellowship and focuses on two aspects of liquid crystalline polymer networks. Non-uniform curvature deformations, produced by defects sufaces or mechanical instablitlies driven by elastic deformations of rubber will be analysed and a consitent molecular theory derived. A the same time the continuum theory of smectic phase transition and thermal fluctuations competing with random disorder in the low tempartaute phase will be addressed. The results will be applied to the analysis of phonon spectra, bulk elasticity and mechano-optical effects.
