This proposal identifies a lack of ability in characterising the physical and chemical structure of real catalysts, and bring able to predict the influence of these properties on catalytic performance, as the major bottleneck in producing and optimising both catalysts and catalytic processes. The proposed programme brings together five chemicals/catalyst businesses, four university groups and one SME involved in the development and production of catalyst evaluation systems to use a microkinetic approach to catalyst design, preparation and formulation. The microkinetic approach is essentially a numerical formalism which predict catalyst properties directly from specific characterisation data recorded for that system; model predictions will be compared with laboratory scale and plant data. This approach will be used to address: (i) how the physical and chemical properties of a catalyst are modified during forming from the as-prepared powder. The effect of extrusion processing and the development of a new batch continuous process for catalyst manufacture will be considered: (ii) a generic study of the way the physical characteristics of a catalyst influences reactor performance.
