The formation of scale on heat transfer surfaces in contact with water or aqueous solutions is causing severe financial and economic penalties in many industrial and private installations. The possibility to reduce scale formation by metallurgical modification of the metal surfaces will be investigated. Ion beam implantation will be used, as a first instance, to generate low surface energy heat transfer surfaces, which should experience less adhesion of deposits. Subsequently, other techniques such as Ion Implantation, Magnetron Sputtering Ion Plating and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition will be investigated. If successful, this technology will have a major impact on the way in which future heat exchangers are manufactured and operated. For example, longer operating cycles will be possible, the concentration of scale inhibitors may be reduced and compact heat exchangers can find more wide-spread application.
