The proposal seeks support for a programme to synthesise, and perform solid state NMR measurements on, alkali-metal-loaded zeolites. The compounds to be studied display an exceptionally rich phenomenology, which guarantees results of interest to a wide range of chemists and physicists. The primary focus of this work will be an investigation into the evolution of the electronic properties of the compounds as they approach a composition-dependent insulator to metal transition. This subject is of enormous theoretical and practical importance, as it underpins attempts to design solids with specific electronic and magnetic properties. In addition the compounds offer the chance to study an exciting range of unusual chemical species, and may provide an opportunity to investigate the new physics of quantum confinement.
