Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research will use laboratory, pilot-plant and production experiments to establish a route for manufacture of CMC tubes based on sialon matrix and reinforced with both SiC particulates and carbon fibres. The materials science of the matrix-reinforcement interface will be studied and the materials engineering of the production route developed. Cold isostatic pressing of composite tubes in a two stage process will be used followed by controlled atmosphere sintering. The outcome will be a materials science model of the materials and formulations for production of prototype components.
