Summary on Grant Application Form
We wish to carry out a collaborative project form three or more sites, combining expertise in Knowledge Representation, Constraint Solving, Interoperability and Multi-Database technology. Effectively we are aiming for a distributed information base which is similar in principle to multi-database architectures, but which is suitable for intentional definitions and procedural information as well as factual data, and which we can make good use of powerful remote constraint solvers. Thus, instead of simply shipping facts as relational tables, we also wish to ship intentional definitions and procedural knowledge expressed in some declarative form. Instead of using standard distributed query optimisation techniques, such as semi-joins, we need to develop new techniques suitable for more complex knowledge, which can be performed by the mediators. Finally, we wish the network to be extensible, allowing new servers to register, which requires one to use a very general knowledge interchange format and query language, based partly on DARPA-funded research in the USA. We also expect each site to be able to function autonomously either as query initiator or receiver, which is in keeping with modern distributed heterogeneous architectures.
