Recent approaches to building energy prediction have been based on statistical or numerical modelling of historical data using regression techniques. The success largely depends on how well the function developed based on the available data mimics the underlying functional relationship of the data. Hence much effort may be spent searching for a suitable function. In addition, for each trial function the parameters must be optimised before the quality of fit can be determined. This trial and error method may be avoided by the use of neural networks. The approach in the proposed project advocates the use of artificial neural networks as a substitute to standard regression techniques in the prediction and control of energy consumption in retail stores. The investigations will be based on a store from the Safeway group of stores situated in Glasgow. This store is equipped with a monitoring and control system and the ANN based system will utilise data from the system and additional instrumentation which will be specifically installed for the project. If the concept of ANN based predictive control of the energy consumption of retail stores is successfully proven, the application of the technique is expected to lead to significant energy savings amounting to between 20% and 30%.
