Summary on Grant Application Form
An iterative research methodology will be used to systematically address sources of variation in user interactions with software and data visualisations. These sources of variation are user knowledge differences, visual search strategies, initial task states and aspects of work quality in software development. This knowledge will be used to improve two analytical evaluation methods for user interfaces: heuristic evaluation and cognitive walkthrough. These methods will be used by a range of analysts on a range of software and data visualisation tools for an advanced software development environment. The planned research has been organised into four blocks. Each block addresses specific sources of variation as inputs to the design analysis and examines their effects on task performance and work quality. Improvements to methods at the end of each block will be based on measures and assessments of the effectiveness, validity and efficiency. The final versions of design principles (for heuristic evaluation) and cognitive walkthrough will have widespread and valuable applicability in software tool design, and also in application domains that require visualisation of complex discrete structures.
