The proposal concerns an investigation of a novel spread-spectrum transmission technique developed by the investigators, termed sequence-segment keying (SSK). SSK requires the availability of completely uncorrelated sets of psuedorandom sequences for multi-user operation. However, the application for a new detection technique, known as matched fitter profile detaction, allows a wide range of sequence autocorrelation functions to be exploited. The project will first derive sets of appropriate sequences.SSK involves the systematic inversion of segments of the sequences in accordance with the information to be transmitted. The second phase of the programme will derive optimum decoders for SSK information. The keyed segments may be of different lengths; hence, there is a potential for variable significance/redundance coding for information where some elements are more important that others, e.g. speech. This form of adaptive operation in response to channel conditions and user requirements will also be considered.Lastly, a Dsp-based implementationof a complete multi-user SSK system will be carried out and tested over real radio channels.
