Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to carry out a systematic study of the application of the theory of finite rings to various related aspects of communications signal design and processing within the context of modern digital processing architectures, The specific aims to be investigated are:1. The synthesis of sets of non-binary sequences over rings with appropriate ACF and CCF properties for application in CDMA systems, and also individually as synchronisation preambles.2. The synthesis of non-binary TCM schemes over rings, using both block and convolutional codes.3. The extension of the code-assisted bit synchronisation (CABS) principle to the non-binary environment to provide additional synchronisation robustness in a new combined block/symbol synchronisation scheme. The programme will be carried out within the framework of a multi-functional, DSP-based architecture, whereby modulation, error control, synchronisation and channel state monitoring are all considered as interactive elements of an overall adaptive transmission system design. All the techniques developed during the programme will be implemented via real-time DSP and demonstrated over existing radio trials facilities installed at Hull and Lancaster.
