The project seeks to create a new range of efficient, wideband and active sonar transducers that operate in the frequency range 10kHz to 80kHz. The devices will comprise 1-3 connectivity coposite transducers arranges in a stack and connected mechanically in series, electrically in parallal. Mathematical modelling will be used to perform a fundamental theoretical investigation, with an aim towards optimisation of the stack assembly, in terms of sensitivity and bandwidth. Both transmit and receive modes of operation are considered, with additional studies in power handling and transmission and noise performance in reception. Experiments will be carried out to confirm the theoretical predictions, calibrate resultant transducers, and provide performance comparisons with existing designs under realistic operating conditions. If successful, the project will extend the operational range of 1-3 composites into a number of important commercial and defence applications, with significant market potential for both tranducer manufacturers and companies specialising in the production of advanced sinar systems.
