A complete understanding of electronic caramics requires knowledge of the behavious of individual grain boundaries rather than averaged properties. We wish to collect and exploit specific localised grain boundary electronic and structural information from electronic ceramics (thermistors, varistors and gas sensors) and correlate this information with both the local and bulk electrical properties of the material and computer models of specific interface structures, by relating the remote electron beam induced current (REBIC) contrast at a given interface and its crystallography to the functional properties of that interface. The role of dopants in stabilisig desirable interfacial structures will be established. Gas sensors will be investigated using an environmental SEM to observe effects related to the sensitivity, selectivity and degradation of specific grain boundaries under specific operating conditions. This information will be used to demonstrate how controlled grain boundary structures, improved homogeneity and increased proportions of appropriate interfacial structures will lead to improved functional properties for both monolithic and thin devices, whilst reducing the unit of both bulk and thin film devices, particularly for micro-systems.
