Biological tissues have an electrical impedance which is a function of frequency. The reason for this dependance is the fact that tissues contain components which have both resistive poroperties and charge storage properties which result in capacitative properties. Within the frequency range of 1kHz to 1MHz it is, in principle, possible to measure impedance spectra and interpret the spectra in terms of tissue structure and composition. The methodology required for this interpretation has not been well developed because techniques have not been available to measure tissue impedance spectra from particular organs in vivo. However, the recnet development of Electrical Impedance Tomographic Spectroscopy has enabled such measurements to be made and has shown characteristic differences in spectra betwwen tissues. The proposaed research aims to develop a new technique and equipment for an interative but fast, method of measuring tissue spectra and separating the dispersions associated with particular components of the issue. The output from this project will be a 4-electrode system for quantitative monitoring of body tissues.
