This project will develop a range of new optical components, which will produce controlled light distributions on the sample, which will in turn produce laser ultrasonic distributions which are precisely controlled in both frequency and/or spatial distribution. This will allow one to develop efficient non-contacting ultrasonic measurement and imaging and also to access test pieces with awkward geometries. To satisfy these aims we will develop design methodologies capable, in the first instance, of producing a series of elements aimed at specific tasks namely (i) compensation foraberration in cylindrical lenses so a fine line focus can be achieved, (ii) focussing onto a series of concentric arcs to both focus the sound waves and enhance the higher frequency components, (iii) a three dimensional focussing element to access ends of, say, a cylindrical roller bearing (iv) a holographic element to be used for both generation and detection and (v) an element capable of focussing bulk waves into the sample. These designs will all be manufactured using the e-beam facility and quartz ceramics, materials, sensors, surfaces, optics, instrumentation. (quartz etching facility at Glasgow University.)
