Summary on Grant Application Form
This case for support describes a proposed enhancement to the ATM network which currently exists at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Queens University of Belfast. The enhancement will extend the range of connections to the network. Specifically, a 155 Mbps ATM switch interface module and associated workstation interfaces are requested. This enhancement will provide the network with the capability to be configured as a service testbed for high speed access networks. In particular, Bell Northern Research (BNR) are developing a Hybrid Fibre/Coax (HFC) access network to provide video on Demand (VoD) services. The OC-3 interface will allow the interconnection of the two networks, whereby issues such as Network management interoperability and, the delivery of real time digitised video.(including compressed MPEG-II video) over the ATM testbed to the access network may be investigated. This proposal builds upon existing expertise within the Department, and will help continue the successful research programmes which have been established in the areas of ATM, SDH, network modelling and network management.
