The allylic oxidation of olefins as mediated by selenium dioxide, is a powerful and reliable synthetic reaction which provides unique and expeditious method of introducing oxygen into a substrate molecule. The aim of this proposal is to develop a method for performing an asymmetric allylic oxidation by using chiral (non-racemic) selenium-containing oxidants so as to produce enantiopure allylic alchohols. We have access to a wide variety of structurally diverse oxidants and this, together with an understanding of the mechanism of allylic oxidation, may allow us to develop a viable method of enantioselective oxidation. Moreover, this protocol has the added advantages that: I) it can be made to be catalytic in selenium species so that only small amounts need to be used, ii) the catalyst may be covalently attached to a polymer thus allowing efficient recovery of the selenium species and reducing the amount of toxic by products from the oxidation.Oxidation, Catalytic, Organic, Chemistry, Asymmetric, Mechanism, Selenium, Methodology, Polymers.
