Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed project is to develop a software environment to support UK vision research. In order to address tasks of useful complexity, machine vision systems need to employ complex and interrelated collections of algorithms and data. As a result, software engineering is a significant issue I both research and practical application of the technology. At present there is no generally acceptable framework for developing methods and applications. A recent SERC funded study showed widespread support for a common environment. An Image Understanding Environment is currently being developed is in US, but does not fully meet the needs of the UK community. This project would extend the basic design of the IUE in order to satisfy these needs. Manchester would co-ordinate Uk involvement of the IUE, contribute to the implementation and provide support for UK users. This should improve collaboration between groups and lead to greater overall productivity.
