Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently developed a unified approach to face image processing and interpretation. This involves building statistical models of the shape and appearance of a face and using them to locate and interpret faces in images. We can use the same models to recognise people and expressions, to code and reconstruct a face using a small umber of parameters and to detect the pose of the head. The purpose of the proposed research is to build on our initial results, developing model-based algorithms suitable for practical applications. This will involve extending the scope and representational power of the existing model, to provide more detailed and accurate descriptions of facial appearance. A key issue is the need to develop methods for dealing with image sequences - we currently process each frame independently. By exploiting temporal continuity it should be possible both to improve robustness and reduce computational complexity. Based on these advances, we intend to develop and test generic algorithms for processing video sequences of face images and demonstrate their use in representative applications, including image compression for teleconferencing and multi-media and face recognition for access control, monitoring and surveillance tasks.
