Summary on Grant Application Form
To gain a good understanding of the effects of liquid structure interactions on vibrational energy transfers. Such understanding entails knowledge of the effects of free surface modelling, fluid compressibility and the statistical variations likely to be found in ensembles of typical systems. To apply this understanding to computational models of structures typical of those found in the marine engineering environment, paying particalar attention to pipework and tank systems. To show where statistical energy analysis (SEA) models can be expected to be useful when dealing with such structures. Year 1. (a) Conduct a literature survey. (b) Study typical structures to choose suitable parameter sets for the archtypical systems. (c) Develop models for two dimensional flat panel problems with liquid on one and side, and predict energy flows. (d) Develop models for vibrating rectangular tank systems. (e) Predict energy flows alloing for contained liquids with compressibility and free surface effects. Year 2. (a) Develop models for vibrating cylinders. (b) Predict energy flows in cylinders containing compressible liquids. (c) Implement finite element analysis for contained liquids. Year 3. (a) Develop models for coupled vibrating cylinders and tanks. (b) Predict energy flows allowing for contained liquids using detailed numerical models. (c) Attempt to produc simplified SEA models in terms of coupling loss factors for the liquid structure interation terms. (d) Assess how results can be interpreted and further developed for application to marine structural problems.
