Electromembrane processes are used mainly as end-of-pipe technology. On a separation process it is possible that they could be used upstream on cleaner technology. This proposal considers that electromembrane processes could be used to separate concentrated nitric acid solutions, enabling the elimination of additional chemicals and high operating temperatures; both of these have a negative environmental impact. Current work on electromembrane processes in collaboration with the Defence Research Agency has progressed very well. The programme proposed would carry out system performance using a modified experimental rig and would undertake a full evaluation of the processes. Several possible process configurations would be considered. If the technology is shown to be feasible, the most appropriate route for continued development would be via industrial collaboration aimed initially at small-scale niche applications.
