Summary on Grant Application Form
Polymeric material used in the aerospace, automotive and defence industries may be subjected to strain rates of around 103 to 104 s under impact. The aim of this research is to develop constitutive equations a these strains rates, to enable stress analysis and design using finite elements. Mechanical properties of selected properties will be obtained using split Hopkinson bars and conventional testing machines and the true specimen temperature will be measured with a fast response radiometer. The data will be interpreted I the form of constitutive equations of the Eyring type. The research will be focused on the fundamental study of polymer behaviour in isothermal and adiabatic testing conditions.
