Summary on Grant Application Form
Internal waves occur at interfaces between fluids of different density, such as the ocean thermocline. In the deep ocean, the thermocline is capable of supporting large amplitude solitary internal waves. The offshore oil industry is presently moving into deeper waters in the UK sector, especially the North West Approaches, where depths can exceed 500m. Internal waves are present which are capable of exerting high forces on visers and thethers. These waves will be modelled in the laboratory, and measured using particle image velocimetry (PVI), and compared with theory. The results will aid design and risk assessment.
