Much of the current understanding of the complex flow around obstacles in turbulent boundary layers is encapsulated in predictive codes commonly used in Industry to assess possible hazards arising from wind forces on structures and/or from the dispersion of pollutant sources. In the latter case the effects of ambient density stratification can be severe but the have hardly been studied. Current codes are at best not validated for such situations. We intend to address this important issue. The unique facilities available at EnFlo will be used to identify the parameter ranges (in terms of bounadry layer characteristics and obstacle geometry) for which ambient stability significantly alters the flow. In specific cases, a thorough experimental study of the flow and consequent dispersion from sources near the obstacle will be undertaken. Our essential aim is to understand and quantify the stability effects. The benefits will thus include a much clearer understanding of circumstances in which stability can be safely ignored in Wind Engineering problems, along with identification of ways in which current modelling approaches should be improved.
