The proposal is a twelve month extension to a current EPSRC-funded project (GR/H45742) entitled Groundwater and Leachate Control and Management in Landfills . The aims of this project were to generate models based on experimental and field data for the use in the design and management of leachate control systems in landfills. Two areas have been identified that would benefit from an extension. In both areas, use would be made of exisiting equipment currently in operation. We have shown that 12 anaerobic laboratory-scale models, that simulate sections of landfill drainage, are able to remove organic compounds from leachates. It is proposed that these anaerobic bacteria can be adapted to degrade the red-listed substance, pentachlorophenol. This would be particularly beneficial at landfills practising co-disposal.The second area involves generating further data form the pilot-scale equipment currently operating at a UK landfill site. Experience with laboratory models has shown, that a lengthy period of inoculation is required before rates of biofouling and leachate attenuation stabilise in this layer. A further 12 months would offer the opportunity to investigate more fully pore volume and leachate attenuation in inoculated drainage layers.
