Currently, most electroplating solutions use toxic and hazardous chemicals such as sulphuric and phosphoric acids, cyanates, cyanides, chromates and phosphates. This study will attempt to replace these toxic chemicals by non-toxic, naturally occurring organic acids, specifically citrate electrolytes. Although it has been known for some time that high quality deposits can be plated from these baths, citate electrolytes are not used in the industry due to their instability. In this study we propose to determine the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters where citrate electrolytes are stable, thereby making them useful to the industry. Metallic copper, nickel, and copper-nickel alloys will be plated from these stable electrolytic solutions to demonstrate the usefulness of such baths.
