Summary on Grant Application Form
Virtual environments have the potential to revolutionise scientific investigations and engineering design by employing multi-sensory virtual man machine interfaces for interacting with a visualising complex data sets. Unfortunately, there has been relatively little research to establish the human factors framework to provide effective integrated virtual environment systems. Without a sound scientific background the emerging technology will continue to present a less than ideal interface, which may lead to the user rejecting this important human computer interaction concept. It has been recognised that human factors will play a significant role in determining the optimum way of interacting with future human computer interfaces and will be a major influencer of the performance of the enabling technologies. The aim is to treat the user as an integral part of the system. It is no longer acceptable to deal with he human computer interface as a series of discrete peripherals. This project will establish a rear understanding of the key underlying human factors requirements of virtual/synthetic environment systems.
