Summary on Grant Application Form
Cement-based solidification technology relies upon the setting and hardening mechamisms of hydraulic cements to physically and chemically fix waste materials. However, recent research has shed considerable doubt on the reliability of cement-based systems; it has demonstrated that cement does not normally hydrate (as occurs in concrete) and that strength development can be due to false set mechanisms that may be reversible. There is evidence to suggest that on exposure to carbon dioxide the properties of cement-solidified wastes can be signfiicantly improved. Carbonation by accelerated means may have potential to overcome deleterious waste induced effects so that certain waste forms may have re-use potential. This preliminary work will investigate accelerated carbonation as a potential treatment technique using an apparatus that will be constructed at Imperial College. The influence of solids content, binder type, waste type and mineral additions on the degree of carbonation will be explored and contrasted against non-carbonated analogues. At the end of this work it will be possible to demonstrate the potential benefits that may be derived from accelerated carbonation.
