Summary on Grant Application Form
There are no established safe limits for chlorinated pesticides such as ...-hexachlorocyclohexane (LINDANE) in the air of dwellings. LINDANE is known to be an accumulative toxin which destroys organs and promotes cancer. LINDANE is used to treat timber in pressure plants, for use in new buildings and in developing countries it is still used to treat exisiting buildings. This proposal is to investigate whether zeolite coatings on pesticide treated timbers can reduce these toxic emissions. It is also to promote longevity of action of the pesticide and in this way can be extended to encourage the use of the less toxic PERMETHRIN, which has limited use due to loss with ageing. Tests on air-borne emissions and penetration depth of pesticide using G.C techniques and FT-IR analysis of pesticide uptake by Zeolite will be performed. Benefits are to the environment and health, and industry.
