Summary on Grant Application Form
Various simulations and numerical analysis of nonlinear systems is to be undertaken. The collision of kinks in the double Sine-Gordon equation and the regime where two breathers are emitted will be examined, with particular reference to the behaviour of a finite dimensional approximation. Numerical integration of both the finite dimensional ODE approximation and the PDE is required. This system exhibits chaos, and will therefore be of interest to mathematicians. The applicability of perturbed Sine-Gordon equations to systems such as Josephson junctions, phase transitions and spin waves in *He means that it will be of interest to physicists. Applications of nonlinear models to biology will also be undertaken, constructing and analysing models for systems such as the immune system. This has possible applications to the medical industry.
