Summary on Grant Application Form
The research proposed will be centred on a series of intensive and extensive field surveys of thermal comfort in buildings in the relatively diverse climates of Oxford and Aberdeen. These studies will use the occupants of six buildings in Oxford and three in Aberdeen with different thermal characteristics, some of them air-conditioned. The subjective responses of the occupants to indoor conditions will be used to explore the link between outdoor temperature and thermal comfort indoors. Using this link, a form for Room Temperature Standards will be proposed, which includes the occupants' behavioural response to temperatures. Such standards will be capable of fulfilment by suitable buildings whose indoor climate is not closely controlled by air conditioning and will therefore lead to energy saving, as well as enhanced user comfort. Physiological models of thermal comfort currently used in current standards are based on experimental work in climate chambers. The research proposed will also explore the contrast between such results and those from field surveys, which indicate that comfort can be achieved in a wide variety of thermal environments by people who are accustomed to them.
