Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will explore the influence of ortho-linked main-chain units, especially benzene-1, 2-dioxy units, on the properties of series of high-performance aromatic polymers, especially poly (ether imide)s, poly (ether amide)s and poly (ether ester)s. To achieve this objective, work undertaken to synthesise bis (ether anhydrides) based on catechol will be extended to other groups of monomers, including bis (ether acid)s and bis (ether amine)s. Several properties of the polymers will be determined, including optical, thermal and tensible properties. For selected groups of polymers gas permeabilities, etc. will be determined. Selected related polymers with para- and meta-linked units will be prepared for comparison.
