|
Much of the effort of the applications software industry is devoted to maintenance. Indeed, change is normal. This project seeks to reduce the cost of this maintenance in that class of applications that are constructed from several large software subsystems and databases. Such applications are expected to both adapt to changing needs and continue to provide essential services.Typically, logical divisions of a large application are recognised by people commissioning, designing and building it. These correspond to areas of activity in the organisation and have much greater internal connectivity than interconnections between them. Such divisions are generally large, corresponding to suites of hundreds of programs and databases with relatively complex schemata and hundreds of megabytes. In operation these divisions may span many dispersed computers and some computers may be supporting activities corresponding to several divisions.This project will develop a high-level notation for describing these divisions as zones. The description will set limits on the interconnection between zones and capture the characteristics of the interdependencies of zones. Use of this information will reduce system maintenance costs since the logical independence and the interdependencies of zones can be maintained in the face of changes to a zone.
