Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will investigate and develop a novel method of monitoring strain on a localised level in a doped silicon structure, such as that produced by boron diffusion. The work will develop the existing expertise and collaboration between the three academic partners. Simple devices will be made at Durham for the development of a strain mapping system at Northumbria using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results of this will be provided to Newcastle as input data for improving finite element models. Strain maps will also be used to assist in failure mode analysis by highlighting localised regions of particularly high strain. Industrial collaborators will also provide samples for strain mapping; they will also receive appropriate feedback.
