Since the late 1980s the chemistry of aluminium and gallium hydride complexes has escalated into a diverse and well studied field. This expansion has largely been spawned by the significant applications potential of such species. Despite this, analogous indium hydride complexes remain almost non-existent, presumably due to the relative weakness of the In-H bond. We seek to bridge this gap by applying our extensive experience in the stabilisation of aluminium and gallium hydride complexes to their indium counterparts. Systems that will be targeted include (i) tetrahydridoindates (ii) Lewis base adducts of indane (L.InH3) (iii) complexes containing pnigogen-indium covalent bonds [(R2E-InH2)n E=N, P, As, Sb] and (iv) alkylhydrido indium complexes. Once developed, these compounds will be involved in a pilot study aimed at examining their potential use as precursors of the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) of materials important to the opto- and microelectronics industries. This phase of the study will be carried out in collaboration with researchers who have extensive experience in semiconductor physics. In addition to the direct benefits this programme will have to the microelectronics industry, it is envisaged that certain of the proposed complex types will also be exploitable as powerful synthetic reagents by organic and organometallic chemists.
