Summary on Grant Application Form
Designs often fail because the requirements were incomplete or ill-defined, and consequently the evaluation and validation are inadequate. Usability requirements are notoriously difficult to identify and specify. This is partly because users find it difficult to express requirements in a form that designers need, and designers find it difficult to express design ideas in terms of its effects on the user work. Our past research on TKS and task modelling in design has shown that involving users in the design process can lead to improvements in the design of interactive work systems. In order for this collaborative design to occur there needs to be vehicles for communication between user and designer. The aim of this proposal is to investigate forms of representation as communication vehicles between users and designers with the goal of improving the quality of systems. It would be too ambitious to investigate in any detail all forms of representation, communication and design purposes. Instead, we propose to develop a general framework within which forms of representation, communication and design activities can be understood. We will investigate in depth particular forms of representation, in chosen communicative and design activities and develop prescriptions and supports for their use.
