Summary on Grant Application Form
Oligo peptides (8-30 residues) are to be designed to self-assemble, via intermolecular hydrogen bonding, into long flexible polymer tapes which become entangled to form gels in either water or appropriate non-aqueous solvents. Rheology measurements will be used to obtain information about the dynamics and persistence lengths of the tapes, the mesh size of the network, and the local stacking of tapes in the network. Cryo-TEM will provide direct information about network structure, and polarised IR on aligned samples will reveal the alignment of peptides in the tapes. Long time relaxation processes, unique to networks of self-assembled tapes, will be studied in relationship to the potential for mechanical control of the rheology of the gels. Control by chemical triggers such as pH and salts will also be investigated. Finally, peptides will be designed to give tapes which have opposing surfaces decorated with hydrophilic/hydrophobic side chains and their wetting properties at various surfaces will be characterised.
