Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme falls into two distinct but linked sections, to run in parallel. Each of them depends on the development of new experimental techniques that appear promising in the light of current knowledge. First, it is proposed to study the free decay of quantized vorticity in the mK temperature range. Secondly, the creation of quantized vortices during fast quenches through (Kibble mechanism), or from just below, the lambda transiiton will be investigated; a preliminary version of the experiment has already succeeded, yielding encouraging qualitative results. The research should lead to an improved understanding of superfluid bydrodynamics and of one of the most closely studied of all phase transitions.
