Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is concerned with generation of inconventional laser beam spatial patterns, produced by novel laser sources and diffractive optical elements, used separately and in combination for applications in material processing. The applications studies are closely integrated with research in LEMA Project C2. Several RF array lasers will be developed; a sealed, portable 200W device will be demonstrated for surface glazing field studies with BNFL; a 2.5kW 2-d array will be built for lab-based cladding application trials (Vandervell). Several diffractive optical elements will be designed, manufactured and tested to produce profiles for a number of processing applications: array beam re-formatting (Lumonics); a line focus beam application in surface glazing; a multiple (fan-out) beam for parallel metal drilling (BAe); alphanumeric character and annular beams for marketing/processing applications; optomechanical design for a laser-based high speed bottle labelling machine.
